Introduction: The Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BCLS) guidelines for managing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases offer a systematic, step-by-step algorithm designed to achieve the best possible outcomes for victims. These guidelines aim to provide essential training for medical professionals and paramedics while addressing the need for universally accepted practices in India, especially considering the infrastructural challenges present in certain regions. Developed from a foundation of both international and national research, the BCLS guidelines were adapted through consultations with Indian experts to ensure their practical applicability within the country, given the lack of specific data from the Indian population. Achieving optimal outcomes for individuals experiencing cardiopulmonary arrest relies on key components: early recognition and activation, prompt delivery of high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation, timely defibrillation, and swift transfer to a medical facility. These critical components are detailed in a structured manner within the BCLS algorithm. Furthermore, the guidelines emphasize the importance of quality assurance at each stage of the resuscitation process.
Brief Description of Event: On the 5th of December, 2024, the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, BBDCODS organized a hands-on workshop on Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BCLS) certified by the Indian Society of Anesthesiologist (ISA), Indian Resuscitation Council. The workshop consisted of lectures, hands-on demonstration and training. 31 delegates from various departments of the college registered and attended the workshop. The workshop was conducted by a team of BCLS trained professionals and headed
by the acclaimed director and course coordinator of the international training center for BCLS & ACLS, King George’s Medical University, Dr. Rajni Gupta, Professor, Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care.
The program began with an introduction of the guest speaker by Dr. Somya Govil, Reader. In appreciation of their valuable presence, the speaker and her team were gracefully welcomed by Dr. Monika Rathore, Professor & Head of the Department, and Dr. Neerja Singh, Professor, Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry. This was followed by valuable insight given by Prof. Dr. Puneet Ahuja, Principal, BBDCODS; reiterating the significance and importance of BCLS
At the outset, the delegates were briefed on the importance of this essential life skill accompanied with audio-visual presentations and lectures. This followed a two-way comprehensive interactive session, that ended with a short tea break.
The session resumed with a step-by-step demonstration by the team on performing Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BCLS) in adults. The demonstration highlighted the type of care first responders, healthcare providers, and public safety professionals should provide to individuals experiencing cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, or an obstructed airway. This was conducted using manikins and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Following the demonstration, each delegate was presented with a hypothetical scenario, requiring them to enact and manage a potential real-life emergency situation through hands-on practice. The session concluded with a lunch break organized by the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry for all participants and the organizing team.

Hands-on practice on manikins
Post lunch, a second round of demonstration was conducted on managing emergency situations in case of pediatric patients using appropriate manikins and specific techniques; the delegates were once again given a hands-on experience of a real-life type scenario. This followed an extensive question & answer session.
After the demonstration, the delegates were tested on their knowledge by a MCQ based, time bound written test as well as viva voce examination, the results for the same will be shortly announced and certificates will be provided bases on passing the test.
An overwhelming response from all attending delegates made the event spectacularly exciting and a huge success. This informative and power-packed workshop concluded with a round of group photographs and high-tea.
